Tenna, a farming village in eastern Switzerland has a population of about 112. As the mayor, Thomas Buchli, told Michele Andina of <a href="http://www.swissinfo.ch/"target=_blank">SwissInfo.ch in a video interview recently, “When it was time to restore the old lift, we thought we could run it on solar power since we already have a lot of solar panels on the roofs our our stables.” Clearly they’re not your average farming community.

The lift, which began operating in mid-December, is named “Small is beautiful” as it stands at a mere 450 meters long. This lift was designed to address a key challenge: There wasn’t enough room on the lift station roof for all the solar panels they needed. To solve this, they designed a suspension bridge of solar panel “wings” above the lift. The panels rotate to follow the sun and can be tilted to release snow if they start to get covered.

Although there were concerns that suspension ropes laden with 82 “wings” would appear abrasive against the snowy mountain landscape, the setup turned out to be fairly subtle with the panels hanging at slight angles.

The lift stays busy, shuttling 800 skiers an hour, writes Adventure Journal’s Michael Frank. On sunny days, the lift produces twice as much power as it consumes, according to Andina. The lift is expected to produce 90,000 kilowatt hours annually — well beyond the 21,000 kilowatt hours needed to run it during the season. In time, this small lift will make up for the initial $1.5 million investment.

The only thing stopping your fresh apple from being completely organic is that little white sticker with the gluey residue on the back side. New York-based electrical engineer, Scott Amron has a solution! His Fruitwash stickers, when put under the water faucet, would dissolve into organic fruit soap that removes pesticides, fungicides and that any water-resistant wax.

“I’ve always been discontent with fruit labels and felt they could do more than just display product info and be difficult to peel off,” Amron told Gizmag. “We buy, wash and eat fruit. So, the wash step was the next thing the label should help with.”

Amron isn’t about to reveal the Fruitwash ingredients, but he will confirm they’re designed to “outlast the fruit they label.”

Company Continues Concentrate Revolution to
Help Save Millions of Pounds of Plastic Each Year

<a href="http://www.scjohnson.com/en/home.aspx/"target=_blank">SC Johnson announced the expansion of its Mini line of concentrated cleaners, which now includes five of the company’s trusted brands: fantastik®, Pledge®, Scrubbing Bubbles®, Shout® and Windex®. The concentrates, available at <a href="http://www.scjohnson.com/en/green-choices/overview.aspx/"target=_blank">www.scjgreenchoices.com, offer an easy way for consumers to make the green choice of refilling, which could save millions of pounds of plastic from ending up in landfills nationwide.

The expansion builds on SC Johnson’s Windex Mini concentrated refill pilot, launched in July 2011, which aimed to create dialogue, engage consumers about the green choice concentrates can offer and kick-start a concentrate revolution. The company’s goal is to create enough consumer demand for concentrated refills to earn them a spot on store shelves right next to pre-mixed products.

A Change Worth Making

American consumers buy 320 million cleaning products in trigger bottles each year, and millions of them end up in landfills. By comparison, concentrated refills use less packaging, decrease shipping impacts and reduce waste. In fact, if just 20% of those 320 million bottles were refilled rather than discarded, it could save seven million pounds of plastic, the weight of 1,170 minivans, in just one year.

More importantly, SC Johnson also has reason to believe that with the right products, consumers will consider the change. The company recently funded <a href="http://www.scjohnson.com/en/commitment/focus-on/greengauge.aspx/"target=_blank">a study with GfK Roper, as part of the 20th Anniversary Green Gauge® survey, to examine green attitudes and behaviors. Among the results: 75% of American consumers say they feel good when they take steps to help the environment.

Better Products, Recyclable Packaging

The key to making concentrated refills a viable option is making them appeal to consumers. That’s why SC Johnson gathered consumer input received online and from focus groups during its initial Windex Mini pilot.

And the company listened. Feedback about pourability and the importance of recyclable packaging have both been addressed. The new, expanded line of concentrated refills comes in small, easy-to-pour bottles made of the same recyclable plastic as a milk jug. The products also address a wide array of cleaning needs – from bathroom to kitchen, cleaning wood to marble to carpet – fulfilling another consumer request.

The concentrated refills are an easy and green choice to everyday cleaning. Consumers simply combine one bottle of concentrate with regular tap water in a reusable trigger bottle.
The product lineup includes:

        •	fantastik Mini concentrated kitchen cleaner
•	Pledge Mini concentrated furniture cleaner
•	Scrubbing Bubbles Mini concentrated bathroom cleaner
•	Shout Carpet Mini concentrated carpet stain remover
•	Windex Mini concentrated glass & surface cleaner

Small Change, Big Difference

Trigger bottles for almost all the concentrate brands – fantastik, Pledge, Shout and Windex – are already produced with 50% post-consumer-recycled content. The Scrubbing Bubbles trigger bottle is made with 30% post-consumer-recycled-content. Choosing to refill has an even greater positive impact:

	•	Requires 79% less plastic than the standard bottles
•	Avoids transporting 19 to 23 fl. oz. of water, depending on the formula
•	The refill bottle can be recycled in most community recycling programs

But that’s just the beginning. If just 20% of the 320 million cleaning products sold in trigger bottles were refilled each year, it could avoid using 3.5 million pounds of virgin plastic and avoid transporting nearly 11.5 million gallons of water, which is about 17 Olympic-size swimming pools’ worth.

A New Type of Greenhouse for Vertical Farming

The Plantagon is an international Centre of Excellence for Urban Agriculture; a demo-plant for Swedish clean-tech and a climate-smart way to use excess heating and CO2 from industries. The potential is tremendous and ambitions high for the new greenhouse being built in Linkoping, Sweden, near the regional energy company, Tekniska Verken. Not least, it will be a new landmark for the people in Linkoping to enjoy.

Recently UN estimated that Earth’s population will increase by 40% and exceed 9 billion by 2050. 80% of the population will live in cities. The urban sprawl of the cities will create logistic as well as food security problems. The response to this challenge is the Plantagon. The Plantagon Greenhouse can be integrated into existing or new infrastructure to increase the efficiency regarding the use of water, waste and energy. The greenhouse will deliver fresh food directly to consumers. The commercial area will be designed and constructed in an equally sustainable way as the greenhouse in terms of energy efficiency, materials and hi-tech solutions.

On February 9th, 2012 representatives from Linkoping city, Plantagon and Tekniska Verken were gathered for a symbolic groundbreaking ceremony. Once the drafting stage is complete, construction of the greenhouse will take an estimated 12-16 months.

“I am immensely proud that Linkoping is the chosen site for the first vertical greenhouse. We will be the first city in the world to test the new technology and the systems involved to develop sustainable agricultural solutions for future cities”, says Paul Lindvall, Mayor of Linkoping.

“We are full of praise for Plantagon’s exciting project launching in Linkoping. Our ambition is to support the project with smart ideas for sustainable energy systems”, says Anders Jonsson, CEO of Tekniska Verken.

“This is a historic day for Plantagon. This ceremony marks the realization of the vision of creating functional sustainable solutions for the growing cities of today and tomorrow, where we can grow food in the cities in a resource-smart way, making use of the special conditions of the city”, says Hans Hassle, CEO of Plantagon.

The Plantagon greenhouse, developed together with <a href="http://www.sweco.com/"target=_blank">Sweco, is designed for vertical agriculture of vegetables in urban areas. In cooperation with several partners, Plantagon plans to develop integrated solutions for energy, excess heat, waste, CO2 and water.

“With this greenhouse we’re developing and fine-tuning the technical systems required for vertical farming in urban areas, together with several well-known Swedish partner companies. We want to gather expertise in the field, and our long-term objective is to create an international Center of Excellence for Urban Agriculture here in Linkoping”, says Hans Hassle.

First disposable razor in the U.S. to use 100% recycled materials in its handle and packaging

<a href="http://www.schick.com/us/index.shtml"target="_blank">Schick® unveiled the latest in a series of product innovations. The new Schick® Xtreme3® Eco™ is the first disposable razor to use 100% recycled plastic in the production of its handle and 100% post-consumer paper in its packaging. Manufactured and shipped out of the company’s 99.9% landfill-free facility in Milford, CT, Schick estimates they’ll be saving over 103,000 pounds of virgin plastic material and 15,500 pounds of virgin paper from going into landfills each year by using recycled materials in the new razor.

“We know consumers are doing their part to live more sustainably, and we wanted to provide a simple way for them to do so with their shave,” said Suma Nagaraj, brand manager for Schick Xtreme3. “At Schick, we’re taking proactive steps to minimize the impact of our products and manufacturing processes on the environment, and we’re continually looking for ways to improve—creating this product was the next step in our journey.”

The intrigue of Xtreme3 Eco extends beyond its environmental impact to the story of each razor handle’s prior life. In order to have a more immediate impact on the environment, Schick chose to use post-consumer recycled plastic instead of other biodegradable or recycled materials. Among the items retrieved and recreated in the Eco razor handle are common household items like hangers, buckets and pails. Overall, the recycling effort will save enough plastic each year to go up and down the Washington Monument more than 2,330 times.

“For many years we wanted to launch a more sustainable razor,” said Mike O’Malley, director of program management and sustainability for Schick. “We overcame many challenges along the way, like making sure the packaging gave us the quality look, perforation resistance and sealing capacity to hold up to the rigors of shipping. The result was the same exceptional quality and exceptional value razor that our customers know and love, now better for the environment.”

Schick Xtreme3 Eco is currently available for both men and women at <a href="http://www.walmart.com/"target="_blank">Wal-Mart with wider, national distribution in April. To coincide with Earth month, Schick Xtreme3 is partnering with eco-conscious celebrity-couple, actress Amy Smart and <a href="http://www.hgtv.com/"target="_blank">HGTV’s Carter Oosterhouse to launch a contest that challenges consumers to reuse common disposable items and reduce waste by creating a functional item out of recycled materials.
